With all the website builder platforms out there relying on AI to build people their websites, we’ve all seen an uptick in people using these tools to make their own websites. What’s missing from this process, is the understanding, logic, and reasoning that a website designer brings to the table. If you’ve found your website isn’t working the way you want it to, here’s something that your website might be lacking on.
1. Lame Call-to-Action Buttons
What is the main purpose of your website? Without a clear and concise call to action, people are less likely to understand what they are supposed to do on your website, and more likely to bounce to a different website. Here’s some ways to make your call to action better:
Make them clear, visible, and action-driven. When in doubt, add an action verb to promote users taking action.
Color choice makes a huge impact on how people interact with your website. Use bright colors for your call to action section which stick out from others. If users don’t notice your call to action, what’s the point of having it there?
Your call to actions should be on the home page of your website, with best results from having it in the first section of your home page.
2. Your Website Is Slow
If your website is too slow, or takes too long to load, people will just leave. A study done by Google in 2018 showed that a 0.1 millisecond improvement in loading time can increase your conversion rates by at least 8%. We’re talking milliseconds. Here are some ways to shorten your page loading time:
Compress images and make sure your website assets aren’t large.. Some website builders already compress images, but not all. For those that don’t, there may be plug-ins available which help with this.
Use a reliable hosting provider. Not all hosting providers are built the same. Some have slower servers than others, which lead to slower loading times.
Check your site speed with Google PageSpeed Insights. Gain some insights using this link to figure out what is slowing your website down.
3. Confusing Navigation
Having too many options to choose from in your navigation can be overwhelming. Having too many options to choose from, might make people confused and leave. A study highlighted that 94% of users believe websites should be easy to navigate, and 38% will stop engaging if they find the layout confusing. Here’s how to help:
Keep the menu simple by sticking to only 5-7 options. You can have more pages than this, but make sure that there aren’t too many that people get lost in a dead end page.
Ensure important pages are easy to find. If the one page that you want people to go to isn’t easy to navigate to, users won’t be able to complete actions.
Add a search bar for better user experience. In the age of search engines dominating the web, people are used to be able to search, so give them this option for your website.
4. There’s No Reason To Trust You
Give users a reason to see that you’re a good company. Provide them proof that your customers have had great experiences with you. Some ways to gain trust are:
Showcase testimonials and customer reviews. People trust reviews, and without them, you’re asking people to just believe you’re trustworthy.
Use trust badges on your websites. If your website doesn’t use https yet, you’re not providing a secure experience for users. A lot of devices won’t let their users go on websites that only use http anymore.
5. Your Website Isn’t Responsive
60% of global website traffic is through a mobile device. Not all websites look good on mobile devices, because they aren’t responsive to adjusting to different screen sizes. Chances are high that if your website doesn’t respond well to smaller screens, you’re losing out on a huge potential customer base. Here’s what needs to happen:
First and foremost, make sure your website looks right on any and all screen sizes. It never hurts to try looking at it for yourself on your phone to see what a true user experience looks like.
Make buttons and links easy to tap. Anyone with big thumbs knows the pains of not being able to click a button on their phone. Make sure the clickable item isn’t two pixels wide.
Test your site on multiple devices and multiple browsers. Not all browsers interact with websites the same, and not all devices do either. Don’t forget about tablets, as well as full screen desktop monitors.
